When victims of domestic violence decide to leave their abusers, one of the most significant challenges they encounter is finding safe and affordable housing. Even if housing options are available, many survivors are confronted with additional hurdles such as strict income requirements, rental history, and others, which often disqualify them from standard housing opportunities.
The prevalence of domestic violence not only leads to immediate safety concerns but also often gives rise to long-term housing instability and homelessness for survivors and their dependents. Many survivors face an uphill battle as they seek to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse. Marda’s Village Chicago – This initiative offers affordable housing solutions specifically designed to meet the pressing needs of survivors facing domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Recognizing the critical barriers that these individuals encounter, Marda’s Village focuses on safety and stability by providing an essential respite for survivors and their children. To ensure that those in need are directed to appropriate resources, applicants for Marda's Village are referred by partner agencies that identify their urgent need for housing assistance. Eligible victims are those who meet the following criteria: 1. They are currently homeless or on the verge of homelessness as a direct result of domestic violence. 2. They possess a stable source of income, which can include employment or consistent assistance such as Social Security or Disability benefits. 3. Eighteen years old or (legally) emancipated minor. Additionally, the survivor must demonstrate an ability to live independently without requiring 24-hour staff support or assistance. This independence is crucial in empowering survivors to regain control over their lives and build a future free from violence. We are currently working to establish opportunities to increase our footprint and connect with organizations that are committed to supporting the future of women and children impacted by domestic violence in the Chicago area.
